How did you begin to love Modest Mouse?
Where did you first hear them and what was the first song you heard?
I first heard Modest Mouse when I was in 6th grade from a girl who was and still is obsessed with them. Of course she was much older than myself.
Anyway the song was on her myspace... Cowboy Dan I do believe:)

my best friend in high school introduced me to them the first song i heard was the devils workday which i found incredibly morbid and have been hooked ever since
I heard modest mouse when i was a freshman in highschool! The first song i heard was night on the sun! its been my favorite song by them!!
when i was in 4th grade my brother, mom and i went to new mexico for christmas and we had to first pick up my brother in colorado. he brought good news for people who love bad news and we listened to it for most of the way down along with untieing the knot by sci. i basically loved them since then and their still my fave band. ive only seen them once tho at 80/35 and they mostly played their newer stuff
i love the old stuff best forever and ever amen
I downloaded some and got some from a friend. after listening to the view and summer, i got a few new albums, and then all the old ones. fabulous stuff.

After playing it to death after an obsession with it on Guitar Hero I decided to look them up and the first one I saw was King Rat. As soon as I heard those trumpets I instantly fell in love with them, I mean I have yet to see any kind of song like King Rat. It's just in a genre of it's own.
After that I did some more looking and found Ocean Breathes Salty and I fell for them all over again. Just loved the lyrics in that song sooo much it's unbelievable and after listening to Dashboard and seeing it's video I started following them.
Now in short I'm watching closely for any new releases from them and buying any albums by them I see of shelves in HMV and what not. That's it really
I was looking at a good friend's Myspace page in 7th grade (2006) and I saw the name 'Modest Mouse' in the middle of his huge music section. I thought it was an awesome band name so I went to their Myspace page and listened, and felt a sort of love-at-first-hear thing. I listened to the four songs they had on their page for a few weeks before I went out a bought We Were Dead. From that point I worked my way basically backwards through their discography... haven't gone a day without listening to them now.
My friend used to go on about how good Modest Mouse were but i never took any notice. Then i heard a song on a scrubs episode and thought it was good so i googled it and found out that it was "Missed the Boat". I then remembered about my friend talking about Modest Mouse a few years ago so I thought I would check them out and fell in love with them immediately.
And I saw the music video for Float On on MTV and didn't catch who it was but loved the way the song sounded. I started to really listen to what was playing so that way I could hopefully catch that song again and heard it a few times but forgot the name of the band. Then a mere 4 years ago I was wondering the library to get some new CDs to check out and came across We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. It's really hard to pick a favorite song though. In fact I don't think I could pick a favorite. They are all so amazing. Quite wondifferous music you guys make. Thank you:)
First song I ever heard was Dog Paddle in my uncle's car who is a huge modest mouse fan. I liked it and looked their stuff up and i was a fan and then he bought us tickets to the show in Atlanta and ever since they came out to Paper Thin Walls, that song has been my favorite song and I have been a die hard Modest Mouse fan.
I began to love Modest Mouse when I first listened to there song 'Dashboard' on the airplane, the mix of beat and guitar playing was awesome.
I listened to it like 60 times in a row, then started listening to there other songs, but my favorite song is 'Missed the Boat' And still 'Dashboard'
I hope we get more fans soon- I showed the music to my friend and hes a fan now.
But lets get recruiting out there! Modest Mouse is way to good to not be as popular as Linken Park.

My intro to Modest Mouse was with King Rat, which is a fun song and an awesome video. But the song that really blew my mind was Ocean Breathes Salty. After that anything I played by MM was just sex.
One of my brother's friends was showing him some music, and his favourite band is Modest Mouse... he was playing it for my brother and I walked in on Bukowski. I was a lot more enthusiastic about it than my brother (he likes sappy Asian love songs *sigh*)...
I like that I still don't know....
what the lyrics are to every song.
where exactly they all came from.
what the next album is going to be like.
exactly what instrument I am hearing (on occasion).
of one Isaac Brock song I can't stand.
I like that I know...
that I have a lot less to question a girl about if she really appreciates MM.
a lot of musicians are kind of pompous a**holes.
I am a scout, I'm going to find a way out.......
In a really high and drunken state at a river party in my high school days, I heard "Trailer Trash". Became completely infatuated with them and their oh so chill tone. Now I have all their cd's and still listen to them everyday. Pretty much influenced all my musical talents and wants as well. Nothing better than sitting back and playing along to any of their songs. Really don't know what I would listen to without them.
i was probably 12 years old the first time i heard float on come on the radio. i was too young to really understand any of the lyrics but i loved the way it sounded so i bought the good news for people who love bad news. I pretty much fell in love. it's been 7 years since then and now i have all their CDs + ugly casanova but i havent seen them live yet!! i was SO close to seeing them in Asheville this past august but the timing was bad
. Hope they come back to the East Coast soon.<:3
I remember hearing the song and kinda thinking the lyrics were funny and asked what band and song it was. He said it was modest mouse and i didnt really think much of it, i had never heard of them before. i would occasionally listen to the song but it was kinda different from the crap music i was listening to. then, about 5 months later, we got guitar hero world tour for christmas. Modest mouses song float on was on it and i had an ipod by then too, so i bought float on, dashboard, and a life of arctic sounds on itunes. i started really liking it and wanting more over time, and by 9th grade i had about 50 songs by them on my ipod. i just fell in love with them, for a solid 2 months thats all i would listen to on my ipod ever, they helped me through alot of tough times in my family and i really really love their lyrics and music in general. i will see them live one day and continue to love and support this band<3

I first heard Modest Mouse music when I was enrolled in a singing lessons. My tutor is playing guitar of their song when I first met him.
so there i was on my zune program...i saw this album that was light green with arrows piercing it and pink blood dripping from it...the only song that was on it was "dance hall" and it sounded a bit heavy but just worked...i started listening to them more and more and the more i listened to them the more they began to have life changing lyrics to them...the songs had the pain of life stitched onto the great sounds and lyrics...at the time i started to beggin to listen to them i started to wonder "why does it always feel like im caught in under tow"
...all in all the main reason why i love this band is because of its amazing sounds and its lyrics that work in everyway in my life and everyones life
the very first time i heard them was 'float on' on the radio.
but i didn't buy things i didn't need then. no internet. end of a short story. i've listened to classic rock my whole life and needed something new. there are so many old songs but none of them make anything good anymore. i ended up going to the library and search for a new band that could get lost in.
i found the album 'no ones first and you're next'
maybe it was because my favorite bands were:
RUSH
Led Zeppelin
Bob Dylan
Jimi Hendrix
and since i can remember - Janis Joplin
they were all unique, sang/played their souls out, and had amazing lyrics.
well i fell for the entire album. later i purchased 'we were dead before the ship even sank' and now listen to other songs on youtube.
they are now my favorite band
Lived in Olympia Washington when I was a kid, my dad had been stationed at McCord (sp?) AFB near there, and my uncle Jerry (who isn't actually an uncle, just one of my dad's buddies) caught me listening to a beach boy's tape I had taken from my parents things. He took it from me and told me he'd bring me better music to listen to some time, which turned out to be a bootleg 8mm with some of 'This is A long Drive' on it. He asked me if I liked it later after I had a chance to listen to it, and I told him I did I guess, because he promised to take me to my first live concert. Later that year in the winter he took me to see modest mouse at the capitol theater in Olympia in 1996, I would've been 5. First song on the tape was Dramamine, and it's still one of my favorite songs on my favorite album to date.
The first song I heard by MM was Missed The Boat. I believe it was playing while I was shopping at American Eagle 3 years ago, and it became and has remained my favorite song ever since...But that's besides the point. A little while later I heard Dashboard and Float On, and liked those quite a bit...It wasn't until I dated a guy who was interested in them as well that I started checking out their older/less popular songs. Little Motel, 3rd Planet, March Into The Sea, All Nite Diner, and Gravity Rides Everything have stolen my heart
I'm proud to say that I'm in love with this band.
I know it when I see it and I knew I liked this group from the firt song I accidently found...thanks for the excellent tunes!
Lonesome Crowded West...and drugs. Thank God for both.
I bought Good News when they went mainstream and then proceeded to buy everything else that they had ever made
About 10 years ago, someone sent me a mixed CD in the mail. Dramamine was on there.. I went out and bought ...Long Drive. Thus begins my passionate love affair.
i, too, first fell in love with modest mouse when i heard a song on someone's myspace. i don't remember whose, but the song was "polar opposites," and i became obsessed immediately. that was about 3 years ago. it wasn't the first modest mouse song i'd ever heard. i guess the first song of theirs i heard would be "float on," which i liked, but not enough to get me into them.
I started listening to modest mouse because my sister listened to them. I don't remember exactly what song it was but I know that it was way back when I was in middle school and I have listened to them pretty much non stop ever since. I love their lyrics, they never get old.
A lot of people always say that they "loved the old stuff but the new stuff sucks" well guess what that is one of the reason I love this band. their music is always different so you don't get bored listening to them. I have all of their music on my ipod and this is the only band that I can play all of their albums on shuffle and never get bored.
My pen-friend sent me a link in 2008 and I listened a very nice song 'we've got everything'
It was my first time with the Band.
I've just fallen in love with them.
I love their all songs.. I would like to go on a concert, but now I can't ...

greetings from Poland :*
i had a nice heart, a nice suit and a baby blue sedan right? and so you know, i was just off doin the best that i can. then al the eunichs were standing in the road singin please stud us out just as fast as you possibly can..that same day my cousin introduced me to life like weeds..and god damn i was impressed
I heard my brother playing Float On and I was really bored with my music so I tried some of there other songs and then I absolutley fell in love. Baby Blue Sedan is still my most played song after about a year now.
I was first introduced to MM from Fuse. I saw the video for Float On and I thought it was pretty neat. Then for my birthday my sister gave me "Good News for People Who Love Bad News" on CD. After that I was hooked. I got my hands on every Album I could. Six years and three concerts later I am still a fan. Heck my second tattoo was based on a song from Lonesome Crowded West. I just love this band.
I heard them in 2000 in the Foundation - Art Bars skate video, the song was A Different City (SUCH A GOOD SONG).
My friend played me the song OHIO and i became amazed then listing to This is a long drive, and Lonesome Crowded west and realized how awesome this band is. sad sappy sucker is amazing! so is interstate 8! Modest Mouse please make a new cd like your old ones. i was embarssed with we were dead before the ship even sank very disapointed:( even good news for people who love bad news was nothing like your best please stop making music for these idiots that love the song dashboard and Autumn beds. pleas start making music for yourself again like sad sappy sucker and lonesome crowded those cds are amazing but i can not say that about, good news, we were dead and what ever this new shit they came out with one good song the whale song. Autumn beds is the worst modest mouse song i have ever heard. just please stop making this pop music for these [Slur Deleted]s that love (good news) and (we were dead) i want to here beautiful modest mouse again, the fruit that ate its self amazing cd! every song on (long drive) and (lonesome crowded) are amazing and there 3 newest cds dont even sound like modest mouse and aren't anything close to amazing.
For my 13th birthday a friend bought me a book voucher. The book I got with this voucher was a about a girl who starts a book club. One of the bands she listened to on her cd player one night was Modest Mouse. I pretty much googled them right away but when I heard their music I found it too weird.
My 13 year old self liked pop music, so I couldn't appreciate the genius of Brock's tortured lyrics and originality. It wasn't until I started talking to a friend about music last year that I went back and rediscovered Modest Mouse. This year, I searched everywhere for people raving about Modest Mouse and listened to songs that they recommended. The song of theirs that made me fall in love with the band was definitely Ocean Breathes Salty. I just really felt like I could relate to the song. Now I've got pretty much all of their songs on repeat! I went to their sold-out show/gig in Melbourne on the 21st of July, 2011, and they were efffing AWESOME. I'm really glad I can appreciate them now. Their music just makes me so happy, and I can really identify with the originality of the music and lyrics because I am also one very strange girl.
I received LCW for my birthday from my older brother.
I suppose the first song I heard was Teeth Like God's Shoeshine.
I know everyone will likely hate me for this, but Float on was the first song I heard from them. Someone showed me the video when I was in middle school and I was underwhelmed. I eventually purchased Good News, but never really listened to it or enjoyed it until I really fell in love with the band. After We Were Dead, I thought I'd dive deeper into the band. It was Teeth Like that God's Shoeshine and the entire LCW album that I knew my life had been changed. I then got every single song of theirs I could get my hands on, and was continually surprised by the depth and exploration in meaning, and pure musical ability and progression. I then listened to float on again, and well, I was still underwhelmed. Those two first albums are good. Very good, in fact. Much better than 90% of what's out there to consume. I've always wanted more from music than entertainment, and those two recent album's gave me a taste of that. Enough to explore the really amazing stuff.
A masterpiece. A friend gave me a copy The Lonesome Crowded West which we listened to while we'd get high and I knew that this band's music would have a place in my heart for the rest of my life.
I think most people have a change of musical taste as they get older. When I moved away for school in Appalachia, I really got into bluegrass. I had always liked MM, but a cover album by Iron Horse called Pickin On Modest Mouse really got me listening to their lyrics. Now modest mouse is almost all I listen to. I really enjoy some of their plays on words and I feel like the songs are about things I have thought my whole life. Music that once seemed a little out there feels smooth, bouncy, and mellow to me. 3rd planet, ocean breathes salty, spitting venom, and custom concern prob top my list. They have really grown on me. I have a few song written of my own that I would love to have these guys put some music 2.....
