Lupe Fiasco? What is THIS?!

So I overheard a friend talking about a new Lupe Fiasco song at school today, having a rhythm closely related to Modest Mouse's, "Float On." Here is the song if no one doesn't know what I'm talking about...

"The Show Goes On" - Lupe Fiasco

I understand that Lupe sampled (or in my opinion, "stole" and just sped-up) a portion of "Float On" in order to appeal to the masses...but NO WHERE on Lupe's site does he or his record label give credit to Modest Mouse. I mean, even the chorus of "The Show Goes On" has a few lyrics from "Float On". So what I'm wondering is...did MM give Lupe the rights to use it in his song? I'd like to know, because I'm slightly infuriated by the fact that Lupe took "Float On," a wonderful and one of my favorite Modest Mouse songs, and made it his own.

Obviously Lupe copied float on. Its as blatant as kanye west is mentally challenged. And just for the record, its funny how the fans of Lupe, write their comments as if they are half drunk and have some sort of mental disorder like that 14 year old girl on the first page. Either way Lupe's version has no sort of talent involved. The only thing he did was write the song. The beat was created by Modest Mouse, and the sounds are coming from a machine. And he is using auto tune. Plus the lyrics are sub-par.

Just going to leave this here since 'fans' seem to know nothing about their own band.

A bit late but just wanted to say...

Lupe Fiasco and his publishers give full credit to Modest Mouse for the song.

In fact all of the writers and producers are receiving a part of the royalties from "The Show Goes On" .... so don't be upset, be happy as this means Modest Mouse is making a good deal of money simply by inspiring an artist that is able to cross-brand for them.

This happens very often in the music business, but no court is necessary since this was cleared far before the single was released.

@nastkillaaa
Nobody said that the words themselves are property of MM, they were saying that the whole chorus is identical to "Float On" in terms of the beats. Then they said that Lupe used "few lyrics" from MM. And you can't listen to the songs in question and say that Lupe NEVER heard Float on before and it was just coincidence.

Just curious, have you ever listened to either song? Because from what you're saying, I don't think you have.

if you think its stolen or a tribute you have to be completely insane.
you just "hear"

alright already the show goes on.
&&
alright already we all float on.

if you ever say "alright already" make sure you call up the whole band and tell them you used their music that day and give them credit for it.

you dont "listen" to both songs all the way through.
they both talk about the same type of stuff but it different.
when they both wrote their songs they were just feeling the same way.
its all energy and vibes and one big coincidence.
you guys need to get a real life and not just hear a song and think the band is cool
you have no idea what indie music is about. you just """hear""" it on the radio.
trust me modest mouse is the shit, lupe is just another kat but he is no thief.

the songs sound nothing alike and you are all rolling way to hard!@yourmouth.

first of all lupe is garbage is shouldnt even be considered a rapper hes nothing but a thief and a stupid [Slur Deleted] if yall dont remember his first song "kick push" he made a song about skating and he didnt even skate thats why terry kennedy made a diss record.. come on people get your music straight MM is a bad ass band and they should get all the credit for that no talent ass clowns chorus without them he wouldnt even have a track its a slap in the faces of all true musicians and music lovers who pride themselves on making honest and original work if you have any repsect for yourself and the music you listen to you would all boycott the shit out of this theif he should be hung hes nothing but a low life [Slur Deleted] thief and doesnt deserve to have his music put out to the masses

Yes, Lupe does state that he doesn't drink, but that's not relevant at all.

The lyrics are not, " we drink so long." The lyrics are, " we dream so long."

Both Lupe and modest mouse are amazing artists, just let them do their thing and equally respect their ideas and styles.

ESPN is actually playing the heck out of it, it makes me sick. Lupe fiasco should be taken to court!

Sorry to hear about your girlfriend brother, And for the record I did not take time to lisen to the whole plagerized song I just look up the lyrics online and thats the first link that came up. Also I would like to say just because you do somthing illegal doesnt mean it's going to be in court...... People like lupe make the statement that it's ok to get on the radio by ripping other people's art off,

When I first heard this song, I thought what a catchy way to revamp a tune that is far past its prime. Rappers sample beats all the time, and I don't feel that this is a blatant rip off, so much as an inspirational homage. I'm almost positive Lupe didn't steal it, like everyone else said, there would be a court date if he did. And as far as credit to MM goes, that's also not something that rappers are likely to blatantly do. I don't believe Rihanna ever publicly thanked Soft Cell for the "Tainted Love" beat? I'm sure MM made a good chunk of money off of this deal, as well as some good publicity from what I would consider one of the more open-minded fan bases of the hip hop community.

And you could do much worse than Lupe. He's one of the more talented artists in the field right now, and still retains his dignity and self-worth.

I hope this doesn't sound pushy because I don't mean it to be. I just hope everyone can give it a fair chance and maybe be happy it's Lupe using the beat and not Lil Wayne.

sorry didnt realise this question/issue had been raised i just started my own thread about this song.
(i was quite annoyed and needed to vent)

First of all, it couldn't be a tribute. In my opinion a tribute is the song entirely. Like a cover. Not just parts of the song stolen and thrown together poorly.

He did in fact take the melody of Float On and part of the chorus. It's disappointing I know. But at least he didn't take the whole song and f*** it up by raping all of Issacs lyrics, and destroying the song musically.

I do not give Lupe props for his thievery. I do not think he is creative at all.

First of all, if anything he did was illegal, they'd be in court right now settling that issue; they're not, obviously. Second of all, Lupe is one of the most creative and inspirational artists right now, just listen to some of his lyrics. Lyrics, that brings me to my third point, if you're going to quote someones lyrics, especially GREAT LYRICS like in this song, and give background information to his lifestyle; for example, "drinking", MAKE SURE YOU GET THE f***ING LYRICS RIGHT. He says "WE DREAM SO LONG", not "WE DRINK SO LONG". For f***'s sake you're worse then my girlfiend.

I agree...From what I've read, Lupe grew up on rock more than rap...I've seen him and B.o.B. in concert and they both performed with full bands (guitars, bass, drums, keyboard, back-up singers, DJ)...Lupe was wearing a black t-shirt and army pants, hardly your typical hip-hop wear, haha...B.o.B. actually outperformed Lupe though...That guy is very talented...He sang a lot more than he rapped and when a string on his acoustic guitar broke, he went over and picked up the electric, haha...

Back to the topic though..."The Show Goes On" will be on his upcoming album, "Lasers" so it's almost a foregone conclusion that Lupe's team were given permission to sample the song and that will more than likely be confirmed in the song credits...

First of all yes, Modest Mouse is a fantastic band, One of the most musically inclined, creative musicians in modern day society, Not to mention they have one of the most flaborgasting performance's the music industry has to offer. The song writer of the band Isaac Brock is a poetic genius, and known for making people meditative when playing guitar.

Ill give you prop's to Lupe, He maid it in the music industry and put out some good tracks.
But he cant be that creative, That's why he plagiarized another musician's work. Which is worse then stealing and is highly illegal. I also saw him live at the same venue (different date) that I saw Modest Mouse, and was not so impressed. His voice live sounds nothing like it does in his recording's.

This is the first paragraph of the song, I would like to point out that he has stated many time's in interview's he does not Drink, So there are chances more likely then not he didn't write these lyric's

All right, already
The show goes on
All night 'til the morning
We drink so long
Anybody ever wonder
When they would see the sun go
Just remember when you come up
The show goes on

Im not to fond of artist who ruin some one's song for money......

Created an account just to say this...

Modest Mouse is a fantastic band and Float On is a great song.

But Lupe is great as well. So often people complain about rap music not having meaning or depth, but you will find a big supply of both of those things in Lupe's work.

He's a big fan of indie music and I believe he meant it more as a tribute than as thievery.

So just sit back and enjoy two great artists doing their thing.
