Thanks for the great show. I hope it won't be long until we see Modest Mouse in Halifax again. Anyone who has a chance to check out the other shows on the tour I recommend you go. The set list was incredible and it was preformed flawlessly. To anyone who says they cant go there is no excuse. If you have to work during a show quit. No money is no excuse. Get a part time job, pawn your jewelry, sell a kidney if you have to but do not miss a chance to see the show.
I just hope that if Modest Mouse decides to come to Halifax again they can find a venue that is air conditioned. It was almost unbearably hot there just watching the show. I can only imagine how hot the guys got while playing. I think i lost about 5 pounds but it was definitely worth it. I look foreword to seeing Modest Mouse the next time they play Halifax.
To the band:
Thanks for the great show. Best show I've seen this year. Good luck on the rest of your tour.
Hardest Working Band Puts on Ass-Kicking-est Show in Sweatiest Venue
Saw these guys at the Halifax Forum on 8/17. I'd never seen them perform live before this, and I will never miss a chance to see them again if they are playing within 2000 km of where I live. This is coming from a fairly lazy man as regards travel, but they are just too good not to go see.
I've been a fan since 'The Lonesome Crowded West' and have been a bit wary of their newer material, but all doubts were put to rest during the show. The more recent songs are ultra tight, punchy, and full of a kind of grim optimism lacking in their back catalog. How much of this is due to the influence of Johnny Marr is debatable, but the bottom line is the new MM is as good as the old MM, minus the sentimental attachments I have to the old stuff.
I got the impression that not a whole lot is left to chance when MM plays live. I've never seen a guitar tech work as hard as theirs did, working as quickly as possible while stepping carefully among the keyboard racks, violin stands, double basses, phalanxes of guitars, banjos, monitors, and assorted vintage-y looking gear of unknown provenance that squonked when touched. The on-stage organization showed in the show itself too -- lockstep rhythm all round with f***ups so few you could count them on the fingers of one hand.
The setlist was well balanced, giving old fans an extended jam on 'Do the Cockroach' that was the best goddamn thing I've heard played live maybe ever, while making sure a good half of the show was material from 2004 til '09 for the more recent fans. Solid versions of 'Float On' and 'Dashboard' got the biggest crowd response of the night. As an added bonus, the band played 'Gravity Rides Everything' live for, according to Brock, the first time since it was recorded.
....more when I'm not so hot.
